A short, dedicated trip to shop for a Mumbai wedding needs a different plan than a local's weekend-by-weekend approach. Here's how many days to budget and what to book before you land.
Most of this site's other guides assume the shopper lives in or near Mumbai and can spread a wedding list across several weekends. That's not the trip most out-of-town and NRI brides and grooms are planning — the real question is usually "how many days do I actually need, and what has to be booked before I land."
How many days to budget
Our six-market checklist lays out a realistic 3–4 day version of a genuinely full list, and that's a reasonable floor for a dedicated shopping trip rather than a trip with shopping worked in around other things. Compress it further than that and something usually gets rushed — most often the bazaar negotiation that gold and fabric buying reward, which needs unhurried time to actually pay off.
Book these before you land, not after
- Bandra atelier appointments for a designer lehenga or made-to-measure sherwani — three weeks' lead time or more in Nov–Feb wedding season, per our sherwani guide. This is the single most common thing an out-of-town trip gets wrong: showing up without an appointment and discovering the fitting slots are gone.
- Hotel location matters more than it seems — South Mumbai puts Zaveri Bazaar, Kalbadevi and Crawford Market within a short drive of each other, while Bandra's designer quarter is a separate leg entirely. Staying somewhere between the two (Dadar–Matunga area, for instance) can cut real time off the trip.
Sequencing a short trip
With only 3–4 days, the order matters more than it would on a longer, locally-paced trip:
- Day 1: Zaveri Bazaar (gold) and Kalbadevi (sarees, fabric) — they're a short drive apart and both reward a fresh, unhurried morning start.
- Day 2: Dadar–Matunga for nauvari, Kanjeevaram or a designer lehenga at a lower price point than Bandra, plus a flower-stall stop at Kabutar Khana if the trip lines up with the ceremony date. See our Dadar–Matunga guide.
- Day 3: The Bandra appointment booked before landing, plus Crawford Market & Lalbaug for décor, cards and gifting if the guest count is already locked.
- Day 4 (buffer): Colaba for guest jewellery and mehendi booking, plus a second pass at any bazaar counter where the first quote didn't feel right — a short trip still benefits from the bazaar's "compare two or three counters" rule, it just has to happen on a tighter clock.
What a short trip should skip
Don't try to fit monsoon-season timing advantages or open-ended negotiation browsing into a 3–4 day trip — those benefit from slack in the schedule that a dedicated shopping trip usually doesn't have.
